Significance: The Mount Vernon West Station of the former New York Central and Hudson River Railroad's Harlem Branch is significant as one of the most imposing and architecturally distinguished railroad stations in Westchester County. The station was erected in 1915-17, during the period when southern Westchester County was developing into a populous suburb of New York City and the neighboring Yonkers were experiencing large-scale development. The Mt. Vernon West Station is one of the three impressive urban stations erected at this time in Westchester. All three of these stations--Yonkers, White Plains (demolished), and Mt Vernon-- were Italian Renaissance inspired buildings designed by the prestigious architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore. The Mt. Vernon West Station is a major surviving example of this firm's work.
